I have written about this as well. It is so frustrating that people cannot envision believing something on one level and believing something different on another level. Like you and Harari point out, it is part of human nature to create stories. The stories we create for ourselves are a simplification of reality. We must not mistake them some king of ultimate truth. There are layers of truth. Thoughts are one layer, chromosomes are another. They can both coexist.
