I recently had a conversation about this with my therapist (thank G she is GC). I said the right year to roll-back to was 1998, she quoted 2000. Basically things were OK back then as they had reached a plateau of egalitarianism where everyone basically accepted these values as mainstream norms. Things hadn't gotten out of hand yet and the economic boom gave hope that economic inequality had a real chance to be reigned in. That was when we still believed globalisation would raise all boats...
